IEC 320 Modular Power Cords and Plugs

IEC 320 Modular Power Cords and Plugs

What: IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is an international safety agency similar to UL or CSA. IEC 320 refers to the physical and electrical specifications of accessory power connectors. All IEC 320 receptacles have the configuration shown at right. They are rated for 6 to 10A at 250VAC. After 9/92, all receptacles will be rated at 10A/250VAC; 15A/120VAC at a maximum temperature of 65°C. The accessory power cords all have the same plug to fit into the instrument, the plug end varies to fit the power outlets of the country the instrument is being used in. The configuration of IEC receptacle is shown at right.

Why: For international manufacturing purposes, it is much less expensive to produce one instrument with a common power receptacle and provide an appropriate power cord for the country of destination than to produce several different models, all identical except for the power cord. Most countries also accept IEC approval as safety standards.

How: When you order an item that has an interchangeable cord, you will be asked what is the ultimate country of destination. We will then send out your order with the appropriate power cord for the country the equipment will be used in.
